Yutaka Kikutake Gallery is pleased to present “winter,” a solo exhibition of works by Haruka Fujita from November 28th to December 26th, 2015. Marking Fujita’s first solo presentation at Yutaka Kikutake Gallery, the exhibition will feature 9 works selected from a series of snow-sheathed landscapes that the artist has continuously photographed over the past years.
Haruka Fujita was born in 1972, in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. She moved to London in 1998, and currently lives and works in Tokyo. Fujita has constantly been fascinated by snowcapped wintery landscapes that allow her to reminisce the place where she born and raised. Subsequent to the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011 that had brought damage to her hometown, Fujita documented the circumstances of her native land in the wake of the disaster, and along with a selection of her previous works comprised the photographic anthology, soundless river (2013).
The exhibition will present an inaugural selection of Fujita’s works from the snowy landscapes, which she has photographed as an on-going life work in parallel to bringing together her “soundless river” series. For the snow-covered, silvery white scenes with their enhanced sense of anonymity, what essentially serve as testimonies of the land are the indigenous features of the terrain that spreads beneath one’s feet, and the characteristic atmosphere that permeate each place. The array of works that have been photographed across various locations in the Tohoku and Hokkaido regions of Japan as well as Russia and several countries in Europe, while forming an abstract scene, convey the native ambience of each place through the carefully cropped compositions.
The photobook winter will be published from HeHe in correspondence to the opening of the exhibition.
