Yutaka Kikutake Gallery is proud to announce its first exhibition, featuring 7 works from Nerhol’s new “01” series. The exhibition runs from July 11 (Saturday) to August 29 (Saturday).

Nerhol’s offerings have so far centered on portraiture, but their latest work “01” is based on a numerical motif. Two numbers were chosen: 0, and 1. On a certain day, 1 minute before midnight, that day’s date (for example, “6.1.2015”) was entered into a search engine with the results limited to data uploaded within the last 24 hours. In this way, the manifold tracks of people disseminating information and communicating with other people during that day became visible. Nerhol printed out the images of these tracks, and through layering and engraving, created pieces of the same thickness as standard canvas paintings from which the forms of the numbers 0 and 1 emerge. Amid the various engraving lines—beneath the solid structures of 0 and 1, the viewer catches glimpses of the fragments of human activity on a certain day in recent history.

Nerhol is an artist-unit comprising Yoshihisa TANAKA (born 1980) and Ryuta IIDA (born 1981). Formerly working as individuals, the two began creating works as Nerhol in 2007 and have since taken part in exhibitions at museums and galleries both within Japan and abroad, to growing acclaim. Since May 2015, their exhibition in Foam Museum (Amsterdam)—their first solo exhibition outside Japan—has been well-received.

At this time, Nerhol’s work is also on display at G/P Gallery (Ebisu, Tokyo) and POST (Ebisu, Tokyo). Stretched photographs of details from their “01 Scape” series may be viewed at the G/P Gallery, while 36 new works—on the motif of the onion—are being exhibited at POST.
