Yutaka Kikutake Gallery is pleased to present “lake, bridge, days, tree”, an exhibition of new works by artist duo Nerhol from November 7th to December 5th, 2020.

Nerhol, who has produced works since 2007 as an artist duo consisting of Ryuta Iida and Yoshihisa Tanaka, while choosing to engage with various motifs such as portraits, roadside trees, animals, and water, has consistently attempted to unravel the multi-layered presence of organic matter that is often overlooked in our daily lives. Furthermore, in recent years they have also selected historical footage preserved as documentation as a material for their work. Such works convey a more multidimensional perspective, by presenting unexpected encounters and “loose threads” that span the passage of time concerning various historical events, as well as the image of the individual that paradoxically comes to emerge through events that exceeds the life of a single person.

The exhibition comprises of three elements: works made from videos filmed by the artists themselves (“Camelia”, “Aya Lake”), a work made from a video recording taken in the past (“Tacoma”), and a work made by downloading all the images uploaded on the web on a particular day having conducted an online search at 11:59pm that very same day (“Days”). Dozens to hundreds of photographs, each and every one different, are stacked, combined, and sculpted into, thus illustrating how their approach to shaping their work is becoming increasingly profound. The images that manifest along with the materiality of the paper upon which they are printed, are indeed a testimony of Nerhol’s remarkable and distinctive practice.

Their major solo exhibitions include, “For want of a nail”, KASHIMA 2018 BEPPU ARTIST IN RESIDENCE, Oita (2018), “Interview, Portrait, House and Room”, Youngeun Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea (2017), “Promenade”, 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art Kanazawa (2016), “Index”, Foam Museum, Amsterdam (2015). Their works are held in a several collections including Foam Museum, Amsterdam and amana photo collection, Tokyo.Iida was born in 1981 in Shizuoka Prefecture. After receiving his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the Nihon University College of Art in 2004, he received MA from the Tokyo University of the Arts, Department of Intermedia Art. He is currently based in Tokyo.Tanaka was born in 1980 in Shizuoka Prefecture and has been based in Tokyo since graduating from the Department of Scenography, Display and Fashion Design, Musashino Art University in 2004.
